France is in the final stages of introducing extensive new legislation on waste management and the circular economy (the concept of designing the economy to minimise waste and pollution and to keep resources in circulation).

Among many other measures, the new legislation will introduce additional EPR schemes for products including waste from food vendors, toys, some medical disposables, industrial and commercial packaging waste and tyres. These schemes will come into force between 2021 and 2025.

Single-use plastics will be phased out gradually, with some things being banned from January 1, 2020 and others being allowed up to 2040. Products affected by the bans will include disposable plastic cups and plates, plastic bottles, plastic packaging for fresh fruit and vegetables and PS foam takeaway containers.

There are also new regulations relating to labelling and the refurbishment of electronic and electrical products.
